State Department Registration

Any U.S. company that engages in the manufacture, export or temporary import of defense articles or furnishing of defense services is required to register with the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC). Registering allows the government to know who is engaged in these manufacturing industries/activities as well as in export activities.  Registration is also a requirement to apply for DDTC export licensing authority. Registrations are valid for 12 months and it is recommended that renewals be submitted to DDTC at least 6 weeks prior to the expiration. Additionally, exporters should review the classifications of their items before renewing their registration.  If all items have transitioned to the Commerce Department’s Export Administration Regulations jurisdiction as a result of Export Control Reform, there is no need to renew their registration.
